Being susceptible to allergies can be difficult enough on a day-to-day basis, but traveling to hotels with potential allergy-inducing factors can be even more burdensome. Let’s face it: hotel rooms are not known for being the cleanest, most sterile of environments. While many hotels are pledging to add allergy-friendly rooms, there aren’t many currently. Hopefully, we here at DealBase will help alleviate the headache (and onslaught of sneezing) related to finding an allergy-friendly hotel room—and perhaps even an Allergy-Friendly Hotel Package or a Free “Upgrade” to a PURE Room.

Chicago’s Hilton O’Hare property was one of the first properties to introduce allergy-friendly rooms when they outfitted two “Enviro-Rooms” with air and water purifiers, hardwood floors and blinds and odor-minimizing agent in 2005. And Kimpton Hotels introduced using all-natural, fragrance-free cleaning products in every one of their properties, beneficial to anyone with the slightest allergies. But it’s New York-based PURE Science that is setting the precedent for making allergy-friendly hotel rooms mainstay. Developing a rigorous 7-step allergen filtration system, PURE Rooms are treated with the latest technology to rid and reduce allergy-inducing irritants (bacteria, mold, pollen, yeast, etc.), adding super strength air and water purification systems.

While PURE allergy friendly rooms are catching on in the hotel industry, easily finding an allergy-friendly hotel room can be difficult—a surprise considering an estimated 60 to 70 million Americans have allergies or asthma. We found that the best bet to find an allergy-friendly room is to:

• Call. When we spoke to most of the big brand hotel reservation agents to see which hotel properties offered any type of allergy-friendly rooms, we had some difficulty. There seems to be no master list of properties with allergy-friendly rooms—either online or offline. So, while the hotels seemed willing to accommodate our needs even if they didn’t have specific hypo-allergenic rooms (Doubletree even offered to transfer us to a “specialist”), finding the hotels was another story. Bottom line, you need to call about each specific property.

We wonder why every traveler wouldn’t want an extra-clean and sterile hotel room….in fact we’re thinking of booking a PURE Room for our next hotel stay!
